A Positive Leader For The Richmond

Sam Kwong for Board of Supervisors at District #1

  • “An integral member of the Chinese Community”

  • Resident of the Outer Richmond for 40 years

  • Occupation: Architect (Owner of the ARCUS Architecture & Planning) - Year in business: 31

Born and raised in Hong Kong until graduating high school, Mr. Kwong immigrated to San Francisco in 1974. He continued his education at City College of San Francisco and graduated with a BA degree in Environmental Design from the University of California, Berkley. Mr. Kwong worked for several architectural design firms until he started his own business in 1985.

Mr. Kwong is fluent in reading and writing Chinese. He reads the local Chinese Newspaper often and helps others with English difficulties in translation. He also volunteers his time in many community organizations; among them are The Chinese American Democratic Club (President in 2011, 2003, 2004), Chinatown Portsmouth Square Garage (Past President and current Vice-President), Past President of the Asian American Architects and Engineers Association, and a Member of the Board of Directors of the Soo Yuen Benevolent Association (A fraternal family association).

Being a professional architect having hands-on knowledge of the building and planning codes, he is well aware of the frustrations of the building process in San Francisco. When elected, he would likely be the only licensed building professional on the Board of Supervisors that can offer realistic solutions to the housing crisis the City is experiencing.

“Who else is better to help resolve the shortage of housing in San Francisco than someone who is dealing with it everyday, We need him” said Philip Ryan, a Richmond resident and friend.

Mr. Kwong ran in the DCCC election in June, although he was not successful, he is encouraged to run for the District #1 Supervisor because the DCCC has unfortunately become a club of two fractions, run by elected officials. They will be endorsing themselves in the November election. “Is this true democracy? I would at least represent independence, and will be an individual that can actually communicate with members of the Chinese community on that Board.” Sam said recently. It is time to take back our community.

Mr. Kwong also has close relations with many in the Russian community as he is the design architect for the Archimedes Banya in Bayview Hunters Point. This is a favorite health spa many members of the Russian community frequent. He also goes to the spa himself, as he believes there is definitely great health benefit using the Banya.
